UNIT 4
Pre-Production Portfolio
Task 1: Definition
Task 2: Types
Pre-Production Defintion:
Pre-production is the work done on a product, especially a film or broadcast program before full-scale production begins. Elements of video production such as the script, casting, location scouting, equipment and crew, and the shot list all happen during pre-production. Pre-production is the planning stage. [Logisitics]
Why does pre-production need to take place
For pre-production needing to take place, it makes the overall filming more easier, with people putting records of scripts, hiring people etc... Pre-production is more like a planner, making sure everything is organised and nothing is missed when the day comes to shoot a scene. [Logisitcs]
What is the process involved in pre-production?
The process of pre-production is the script breakdown, then the board & budget, these two willl be the foundation of the whole film, as it will limit certain actions. Furthermore, assembling actors this is important as we need actors that fit in with the overall plot. The location scouts, this is were we will shoot our scenes and the insurance of the location whether someone got injured while filming in a certain location. Then finalising the ideas, iron out the important points and the last one will be the filming the actual scenes. [Adherence of Codes of Practise and Regulations]
Once answered, categorise the above points under the following:
Media logistics - includes the optimal planning, introduction, control and analysis of each video asset and its data throughout sequential production and distribution workflows
Finance - the management of large amounts of money,
What is the purpose of carrying out pre-production?
The purpose of carrying out pre-production is to overall make the whole film, as without any pre-production being formed, the movie won't do well and won't be able to finish on the designated date. [Logisitics]
What are the requirements for pre-production?
It involves finalising the script, bring the actors and crew, finding the locations, determing what equipment you'll need, and figuring out the budget. [Finance]
What makes pre-production different from production?
Pre-production is the stage of a film, television or commercial production that takes place before filming begins. It is followed by production (during which visual content will be filmed) and post-production (where the filmed visual content will be edited into a coherent whole). - Google [Finance]
What makes pre-production different from post-production?
Production and Post Production. In short, pre-production is where preparations are made for the shoot. Production is where raw elements are recorded and post-production is where the images, sound and other effects of the recorded film are edited. - Google [Finance]
Finance
The meaning of conglomerate [is the company that owns numerous companies involved in mass media enterprises, is something that not many people even know of, but it is crucial in understanding where your news is coming from. -Google] The joint financing is [when the provision of funds for a project, etc, from two or more sources - Google]
Time
The deadlines is the designated date for projects to be presented to the public. As in media, there are deadlines for shootings, presentations, script etc... Deadlines are important, so everything can run smoothly. Furthermore, the equipment availability is the very crucial, with equipment being the main foundation for our shootings. As, you need permission to use certain equipment. With certain equipment being hard to access. Personnel availability [is when a time an employee/actor is exclusively available to work for an employer and cannot be scheduled elsewhere during that time. - Google] Furthermore, the timescale [is when the time is allowed for or taken by a process or sequence of events.- Google]
Facilities
The post-production equipment is the editing tools used when all the clips are finished and ready to put into a sequence. The equipment for this post-production is a very steady and reliable system for your editing to take place. Furthermore, the on-shoot houses is mainly having permission to record different shots inside the house. As, normally it cost money to rent a certain house.
Locations
The availability/identification is the area we're we rented out. If, we're able to use it or not. Furthermore, the limitations/risk (distance, access, cost). All, these have there limitations and risks, as the distance can effect the actors, we're they need to go somewhere far, which also cost money like petrol etc... Another limitations and risk is the access of the locations and equipment, with this being important, with some locations not being accessible or too expensive to rent. The last limitations and risk is the overall cost of everything, we're we need to budget our balance or things won't go well.
Personnel
The technical crew, actors, extras all these members make up the whole film, with technical crew carrying the equipment from location to location and you got the actors who will be part of the movie and also the extras making each scene very realistic as possible. These members are payed fairly, with extras being payed still but not as much compared to the actors and crew.
Materials
The materials like the audio, script, interview, properties etc... There are more materials that I've haven't mentioned but these materials I've chosen/said is quite the important ones with interviews of other actors. This is able to show us other actor's weakness and strength and pick whether they fit the role or not. Normally called an audition. The script is normally filled with the number of shots, audio, dialogue as well. Another is the clearances, this is used when the overall shooting is finish in one scene and they had to move all the equipment to another place without breaking anything. So, they would probably have a specific date for the clearance.
Codes of Practise & Legislation
[The Mechanical-Copyright Protection Society (MCPS) collects royalties for songwriter, composer and music publisher members, when their music is reproduced, in any format – including online, physical and synchronised - Google]
The legal (copyright, health + safety) these help and avoid anything that will make another company sue or take majority of the income when the movie comes out. This is we're copyright takes place, were they will ask for permission from someone for example: an artist, they will ask them to use their songs for the movie. And that is we're they will get some cut of the money. Furthermore, the health and safety for the crew and actors, we're rarely actors can get injured while shooting a scene. This can normally delay the scenes and movie as well.
Regulations - (OFCOM, IPSO, ASA, BBFC, PEGI), Trade Unions and Professional Bodies (PACT, NUJI)
Ofcom - is the regulator for the communications services that we use and rely on each day. We make sure people get the best from their broadband, home phone and mobile services, as well as keeping an eye on TV and radio.
(IPSO) - is the independent regulator for the newspaper and magazine industry in the UK. We hold newspapers and magazines to account for their actions, protect individual rights, uphold high standards of journalism and help to maintain freedom of expression for the press.
ASA - We respond to concerns and complaints from consumers and businesses and take action to ban ads which are misleading, harmful, offensive or irresponsible.
(BBFC) - is independent, non-governmental and not-for-profit, and has had the responsibility of classifying films since 1912, video tapes and discs since 1985, and more recently, online content.
PEGI - is the system by which games and apps are age rated to provide guidance to parents as to whether they are appropriate for their children.

Learning Aim A : Core Assessment
FORMAT - FUNCTION - PURPOSE
FORMAT = Type of process/documents
FUNCTION = How it operates/works
PURPOSE = What it aims to achieve
Risk Assessment
Budget Breakdown

The function of a risk assessment is a thorough look at your workplace to identify things, situations, etc. That may cause harm, particularly to people/crew. After
the disadvantage you spot, you examine how likely and how dangerous it will be.
Furthermore, the purpose of a risk assessment being done, is to make sure that people don't get overall hurt and that can delay shooting plans, and can delay the release date of the film. This is used to keep track of the disadvantages when filming in the area.
The function of a budget breakdown is to establish the fundamentals of the whole film. As, they put everything they need to film each scene. And keeping some money for the actors, meals, accommodations for the crew. Everything is there stated. Another solution is them knowing what types of equipment cost more and what we need and what's the actual cost of getting those type of equipment.
Furthermore, the purpose of the budget breakdown is to have the correct format and knowing the balance of your budget, as it manages the entire movie, with different options to pick to save money.
Shooting Schedule
Call Sheets

The function of the shooting schedule is a to-do list for the film crew. It includes the dates, times, and locations they will have to attend to complete your project.
The purpose of the shooting schedule is to achieve the exact time and day when everyone is in one designated place, as the shooting schedule is the main foundation for the whole crew to be in the place, which doesn't delay anything.

The function of the call sheets are given to the cast and crew in advance of a day's shoot and they tell each crew member everything they need to know about the day.
The purpose of the call sheets is to achieve we're actors are called to a designated place form them to film, as this won't cause any delays as overall, they will know were to go and this will limit any problems going further.
Shot List
Story Board

The function of the shot list is a document, which has all the shots you would like to include on the day of shooting, this is detailed checklist that gives the video a sense of directions for the actors on what to do or what expressions they will need for that exact shot, this is for the films expectations.
The purpose of the shot list is to achieve having the exact same scenes, and having each scene and shot at chronological order. This will make each scene come alive bit by bit. This also makes each scene more better for the actors as they will know what to do which overall makes the scene more impactful and meaning.
The function of a storyboard is your foundation when you make a video/film.The storyboard visually guides you throughout the production process. By planning your ideas, you know which shots you need to create and how to create them when filming begins.
The purpose of the story board is to achieve the final preparation for the film. As, it shows what scene will be appearing and what it will look like when it's actually filmed in real life. This is able to guide the people recording the scenes. As, they will follow the storyboard.
Mock Ups/Layouts
Location Reece

The function of the mock ups, is the draft of the scenes in order, with the designs of each scene linking to another. This is similar to the storyboard but it's more of a draft on what will actually look like when filmed.
The purpose of the mock ups is to achieve what your scenes and shots will look like when put together but in a drawn draft. This will help the directors, and can overall help them see what it will look like when everything is done.

The function of the Location recce's is allowing the location to be accessible and sustainable for the crew and this will outline whether the place is available or suitable for us to use for a certain date.
The purpose of the Location Reece is to achieve the accessibility of recording on that specific sight. As, it gives permission to use the location, making sure we don't get sued or kicked out.
Equipment Booking
Script

The function of a equipment booking, is the process of collecting and reserving any equipment you will need when filming, as this is more like a check list on the things you need when the time comes.
The purpose of the equipment booking is to achieve the right equipment for the shooting day, as this doesn't delay the time and doesn't ruin the overall expectations for the scenes.

The function of the script is the overall dialogue for the actors to do when shooting the scenes, as this will guide the actors each step of the way, with different things to express. Making the scene more fluid.
The purpose of the script is to achieve the original expectations for the actors, as the reason why they added a script is to make the actors say what the directors wanted them to say as this will make the scenes more alive, with having the correct dialogue and expressions will make the scenes of the film more better.
Sound Log
Video Log

The function of a sound log, is the checklist of every shot that includes sound, this is to check if one the sound on each scene doesn't quite fit or doesn't sound right, they would write, 'not good' or 'should retake'. This will overall improve the scene.
The purpose of the sound log is having the correct audio and having the audio clear, making the scene more meaningful and more professional.
The function of a video log is managing whether a video that has been shot worthy for the final edit. They add all the clips that was shot from the day and sort them out from worst to best, to show which clip to use and what clip not to use.
The purpose of the video log, Is to achieve the correct video for each scene, as making sure each scene is very clear and detailed, and less blurry this can make everything better. And also can make the edited process more easier.
